Free PDF sewing pattern: Tanya ruffled sleeve tunic dress

As I am taking a break from all the bad news about COVID-19, I realize that I become more effective – creating lots of new patterns with the hope that it will soon get better so that I can wear my new dresses outside.

The Tanya ruffled sleeve tunic dress is the result of a creative day when I realize I have become too chubby to fit in my older fit and flare dresses. That must be the COVID-19 to blame! Making people stay at home idling around with nothing much to do except eating and sleeping (I do not have much motivation to keep working out inside the house).

This dress is loose fitting, falls below the knee and has ruffled sleeves. I believe the sleeves add some statement to the classic silhouette – which is quite common seen in any wardrobe.

Match this dress with a straw hat, flat sandals, and you are ready for a nice day in the sun, by the beach, or in the sunny garden (like me!)

I have played around with the 3D simulation of this dress, so that you will have a direct visualization of the dress when put up on your body. Do you think that this is a nice dress to make?

Just like always, the Tanya tunic dress is made with 10 sizes from XXS to 5XL, meaning it can fit both the slim and the chubby, and I believe it will look good on any one!

The Sarah skirt pattern

I am introducing another piece in the September collection – the Sarah skirt.

This skirt features a paneled design, a pencil silhouette which falls right below the knee and a kick pleat at the back for easy movement. It is a practical piece of clothing, with countless mixing options. This Sarah pencil skirt will look great with button down shirt and high heels for a working day, or with simple T shirt and sneakers for a date with your girlfriends.

You can either make it with just one color or print (like the example below that i have made):

… or with different colors for a color blocked skirt which creates the illusion of a longer and slimmer bottom part:

One advantage of this skirt is that it is easy to make. It will not take you too much time to finish this nice piece of garment. After printing, taping and cutting the pages of the PDF file, you will get the pattern pieces as follow:

I am sharing a pattern for a nice skirt that I really like. This is a skirt with uneven hem, and it will be really really nice when made with silky fabric. Imagine the fabric floating around your legs when you walk! So romantic and feminine :)

The pattern is made using layered PDF, please check for your size before printing so you won’t waste your paper. If you still do not know how to print a layered PDF, please check for the instruction here.

You can print this using your home printer and A4/Letter paper. I calculated the printing area so that you will be able to use either type of paper to print the pattern out perfectly. Always print the first page first and check with the test square if you are printing at the right scale before you print out the whole pattern.

Deep sweetheart neckline sheath dress

Hi there,

Let’s take a look at today’s dress pattern. Do you think that this darling is somewhat vintage looking? And it also looks like a lot of high-street fashion. If you do not believe me, just visit nordstrom.com, theoutnet.com, etc. to see the brands like Victoria Beckham, Roland Mouret, Stella McCartney or Michael Kors – you will find a lot of similar designs.

This dress features a deep sweetheart neckline, half sleeve and below the knee length. It is suitable for special events, so choose a luxury fabric to make it look classy and elegant. You will definitely feel confident in this dress!

The dress pattern I share in this post has a straight skirt. If you prefer a pencil design, narrow down the side seams, starting from the fullest part of the hip (marked with notches) down to hemline. It is a really quick modification, mark a point at the hemline at the desired width of skirt hemline and draw a straight line from the hip notch to the marked point. Then redraw the seam allowance and cut the pieces. It is similar to the demonstration below – the red lines are new side lines, the blue lines are new seam allowance lines.

And because this is going to be a high-class dress, I recommend that it be made with full lining or bodice lining. Be patient and extra careful when you sew the neckline – it will affect the whole look.

Tight neckline half circle dress pattern

This dress features a tight neckline, short sleeves and below the knee half circle skirt. This dress is so modest and feminine and can be worn to many events, from a day date to meeting parents. It is also easy to mix with accessories like purse and high heels. And of course you can be confident in this dress because this design flatters almost any type of body shape, especially when you have narrow hips just like me – it balances the upper and lower part of your body and gives you an hourglass silhouette.

This dress can be sewn with many types of fabrics – from lace to chiffon to jersey knit. I was so in love with this deep red lace dress on Asos that I found myself a good piece of lace to sew this and wear it to my best friend’s wedding (I have very bad impression with buying clothes online – they look so different on the website). It takes a bit more time to sew with lace because you will need to sew with lining but it is worthwhile – who would not love a beautiful lace dress?

Y dart A line dress pattern

The dress today features a bateau neckline, 3/4 sleeves, A line skirt with center front box pleat and below the knee length. The front bodice darts have been moved to make a Y shaped detail to add some structure to the whole look. This is a modest design that is suitable for almost any kinds of occasion – from work to dinner date. Feel free to use any fabric you like, because each will give you a different delight.

I personally love the A line skirts, because it helps hide my narrow hips and balance with the heavy top while not undermining my height (you know I’m short, just 1.55m). It is also great when you make it with flowy fabric – imagine how it moves when you walk, so feminine and sweet! I have quite some simple A line skirt dresses, so this time I am adding a center front pleat. Although it will not affect much if you sew the dress with prints, but if you sew the dress with solid color, it will become a nice detail.

Sweetheart bateau neckline sheath dress pattern

Ahhh, I am in love with this beautiful sweetheart bateau neckline as soon as I stumbled upon this design by Goat Fashion on Pinterest. I decided to make myself one, and this is the pattern that came along with the pattern for myself. Hope you will enjoy it!

This dress has a sweetheart bateau neckline, below the knee length and 3/4 sleeves. I must say it is a formal meeting ready dress. Just put this dress on, choose a matching hat, and you can even go to the Royal Ascot! Of course, it is also quite moderate, so you can be confident to wear it to work or a professional meeting.

Mandarin collar sheath dress

Mandarin collar is a staple to any wardrobe with Asian influence. It is a stand up collar that gives the garment a nice new look. I have been interested in Mandarin collar for a long time, and I think this type of collar is really stylish. A simple dress can be upgraded to a formal event ready piece with this kind of collar. Modest, and still drawing attention to the graceful neck of the wearer.

I created a pattern for a sheath dress with this beautiful collar. I move the darts to the center neck to draw attention to the neckline. This dress can be made with solid color, or with prints – especially Asian style prints.

This dress is below the knee long, but you can lengthen or shorten it to your liking. You can even skip the kick pleat at the center back seam and make a slit at the side of the dress to make it look like a cheongsam – a traditional dress of Chinese women. V neck sheath dress with contrast waistband

This dress is inspired by the Victoria Beckham sheath dress. It features a below a deep V neckline, knee length and contrast waistband. This dress is amazingly classic and versatile, and I can imagine wearing it to many kinds of events, from professional setting to an extra-curricular event where all the guests need to wear something classic and dressy. It is an office-ready baby that can save you a lot of time searching in your wardrobe for an outfit. Just wear it with a pair of classic black or nude high heels, and you are ready to go!

This color combination will create an illusion of a smaller waist than actual. If you worry white color can expose the flaws in your figure, a dark color or a good print can help you out. To my personal taste, I love the combination of black and white, red and black, navy and yellow, green and black, etc. There are countless color combinations that you can choose to make this beauty.

Asymmetrical gathered front dress pattern

Do you feel that basic dress patterns are just not challenging at all? Do you want to try a new style for your dress?

I always think that classic patterns are interesting, not just because I have countless choices of fabrics to make them, but also because the simpler the pattern, the more careful I need to make it look high-class. That is why you are going to see a lot of classic sewing patterns on my blog, and along with them are examples of luxury brands’ pieces to show you how simple patterns are turned into thousand-dollar babies.

Of course, as I am really into pattern making, I do not feel happy with just simple patterns. I think it is interesting to modify the pattern into various styles. One of the most popular ways to modify sewing patterns is dart modification. With just some slashes and shifts, you will have a totally new and innovative dress! Many times have I failed, because I tried something too unusual, and the results were more suitable to runways, not real life (at least for me, because I am not very adventurous with my outfits – I prefer safer choices). I finally realized that if you want your dress to be special, just use one or two details, don’t overdo it. For example, just change the upper part of the dress, do not touch the lower part, or just change the lower part and leave the upper part alone. Just one detail will be enough to make the dress unique and still suitable for us commoners. If you are not one, just try anything you can think of, the worst thing would be is you ruining some yards of your fabric (and papers). But every fail has its benefit, you will grow more experienced each time and won’t make the same mistakes again.

Today I am sharing with you the pattern for the asymmetrical gathered front dress. It features an asymmetrical gathered front bodice and a pleated (or gathered) below the knee skirt. I think it still looks classic with the length, but have a modern breath with the gathers. Also you can choose between a pleated skirt and a gathered skirt. A gathered one is suitable with thin and soft fabrics, while a pleated one is more suitable for thicker and stiffer fabrics.

The pattern is created in pdf format. You download the pattern of your size (check in the Size Chart) and print it on A4 paper at actual size/no scaling/100%. There is a test square where you can check if the pattern is printed true to size.
