Free sewing pattern: Diana flounce sleeve top

Hi friends,

It’s already August (so fast) and you can see major fashion houses have already loaded their fall collections. I think although it is still burning hot outside, it’s time to start making patterns for milder weather. And I am going to start with a simple long sleeve top, which is a must-have in this kind of season, not too hot to wear sleeveless, but not cool enough to add another layer to your outfit.

This feminine Diana flounce sleeve pattern is a simple yet practical piece that you can easily mix with many other pieces like skirt, pants and jeans. It is a modest design, so you can be confident to wear it to work. Imagine yourself wearing this Diana top tucked in a pencil skirt. You will soften the office wear—a lot!

This is just a quick 3D simulation of the Diana top:

in red polka dot

... and in floral

The pattern is made using layered PDF, please check for your size before printing so you won’t waste your paper. If you still do not know how to print a layered PDF, please check for the instruction here.

You can print this using your home printer and A4/Letter paper. I calculated the printing area so that you will be able to use either type of paper to print the pattern out perfectly. Always print the first page first and check with the test square if you are printing at the right scale before you print out the whole pattern.

Do you want to add side seam pockets to the pattern for additional convenience? Just go ahead because it is too easy, just follow the quick instruction here.

After taping down all the pages following the instruction, the overall layout of the pattern pieces is like this:

he cutting instruction is for the garment with facings. If you choose to sew it with bias binding, skip the front facing and back facing pieces. If you choose to sew with full lining, skip the facing pieces and cut a set of front and back pieces in lining fabric.

Free sewing pattern: Celine crop top

Hi there,

I am posting this Celine crop top pattern, just because I was happy making the Anna skirt, and I wanted to have a nice top to finish the outfit with it.

The Celine crop top features a round neckline, princess seam, short sleeves and is quite short. It falls just on the natural waistline. When I simulate the Celine crop top, I have such fun "making" it with different types of fabric and various prints and textures - and they all come out beautiful. Let me show you how it looks...

How do you think of this? Nice enough for a day out, right?

Free sewing pattern: Veronica dress

Hi guys,

I guess I should name my patterns, because I just find out that if I just list the features of the garment (like short sleeve, round neck, knee length, etc.), some of them will be really long, or will cause confusion with the same name for different model. So from now on, you will see the pattern with a name, I just name them randomly to my liking.

And the first dress with a name I am sharing today is the Veronica dress.

This dress features a deep V neckline, a gathered front, and a flared skirt. It is simple and easy, and it will make you beautiful I'm sure.

Here is a 3D simulation of the Veronica dress:

And this is how it looks on a size M model.

And this is how it looks on a size XXL model. Still adorable, huh? I really love how the fit and flare form flatters the curves of the wearer, no matter what their body shape is.

Cutting instruction:

This is how you will get if you print all sizes. Messy, huh? Just print what you need, you won't get confused.

The cutting instruction is for the garment with facings. If you choose to sew it with bias binding, skip the front facing and back facing pieces. If you choose to sew with bodice lining, skip the facing pieces and cut a set of front and back pieces in lining fabric.

A. Front - 2pcs

D. Back Skirt - 2pcs
E. Front Facing – 1pcs + Fusible Interfacing – 1pcs

Free sewing pattern: Half sleeve drop waist dress

I am sharing the pattern for the drop waist dress that I made 3D simulation yesterday. I am going to print it and sew it, so just wait for my dress in real life!

This dress features a loose fit, an over the knee length, a round neck and half sleeves. It is simple and yet still elegant enough for a work day or a date night. Make it with soft flowy fabric for a flirty feminine feel.

For the sake of making it as simple as possible for newbies, I discarded the back zipper. If you want to add a back zipper, add a 1.5 centimeters or 5/8 inch seam allowance to the back piece and cut 2 of them.

New dress pattern coming

I am making myself a new dress. And of course, first I have to make a pattern for it. I really love how using 3D CAD program can help me to view how the pattern turns out before I even make it with the accuracy of over 90%.

I just learned how to make a video clip out of a 3D simulation, so today I will give you a peek at the dress I am making. I tend to make simple dresses - not because I am not good at sewing, but because I do not have much time to spend on complex projects. And simple dresses do not mean that they are not beautiful. You must have heard about the minimalist trend - I am a big fan of it. I love using luxurious looking fabric and making simple pieces. I think they look more like what royals wear - simple, modest, elegant and no one can deny their beauty.

Let's see how the pattern turns out in 3D simulation, do you think it is worth sewing?

And this is how it looks in motion. I really love how I can visualize what I design immediately.

Free sewing pattern: Simple T-shirt

I just realize that most of the patterns I posted on this blog are dress patterns, and only a few patterns for other types of garments. It is because I am a crazy fan of fancy dresses, and I love sewing them (and because I think I look better in this kind of feminine clothing). But yesterday a reader asked me to post patterns for tops, pants and skirts, and I found out I was being too ignorant of reader's need to post mainly dresses.

So today I am sharing a simple pattern for a T-shirt. This is simple enough for those who are new to sewing because it does not have many details - just one front piece, one back piece and two sleeves. For me, I can make such T-shirt in less than an hour.

This T-shirt features a slouchy fit and short sleeves. It is just the type of staple garments that you need to have in your closet. You can make this simple top using jersey fabric, or any kind of soft and a bit stretchy fabric for a comfortable feel. I am thinking of making one with bold tropical print - it will be nice for a holiday by the beach.

This T-shirt is made using European sizing system, so its size range is from size 36 to size 50, you can find your size in this table below:

Free sewing pattern: Baby's bucket hat

It is really hot these days, the sun keeps on burning the ground until late in the day, and I found out my skin got tanned even when I was careful enough to wear sun-proof clothing. This made me think of my little baby boy who is active under the sun lots of the time and I decided to make him something to protect his tender skin.

The first thing I made for my boy is a reversible bucket hat, and I think that it is quite nice, so I'd love to share it with loving mothers who are readers of this blog.

This 3-page pattern is a very easy one to cut and sew, and it takes just some small pieces of fabric. You can make it in just about 1 hour.

The brim of this hat can be modified if you want it larger or smaller. I want it large to cover my baby's head so the pattern has a wide brim of 10cm/4in. I also made another hat with a 7cm/2.75in brim.

The pattern is made for baby under 3 years old whose head circumference is under 52 centimeter/20 inches, so it is quite small. I think I will make a pattern for bigger children and grown-ups next time.

Because my baby is a boy, I do not make any decorations to the hat (maybe because I am too lazy, I was just making excuses). But if you have a girl, a bow or something girly would look beautiful on this hat.

The pattern consists of 3 pieces: the Crown, the Side and the Brim. Cut out 2 sets of these pieces using 2 different colors, and after sewing them together, you will have a reversible hat to mix with different outfits.

A little twist to the drop waist dress

Hi friends,

I got a bit carried away and played around with the pattern for the drop waist dress that I shared a few days ago. I changed the neckline to V shape, and made a tiered flounce. It turned out quite nice and I was so happy with it. I even spent some time to turn it into a printable PDF pattern!

This is how it looks from front and back. It's simple and has a flirty feel because of the layered hem, and I believe if you make it in soft, flowy fabric, you will have a nice dress for a day out.

And this is a 360 degree view. I made this GIF image but the quality is quite low :(

Do you feel that this is nice? Tell me how you think of it!

I am sharing the pattern here just in case you need it. You can easily modify the pattern for the drop waist that has been shared previously to get this pattern.

Again, this pattern is made in layered PDF, check how to print out your size in this instruction and remember to check for your size before printing.

This is how it looks when I printed just size L and taped all pages together:

Free PDF sewing pattern: Sleeveless drop waist dress

In this post I am sharing the pattern for the summery sleeveless drop waist dress that I have introduced in the previous post.

A week ago, I came across an article about creating and printing layered PDF files, and it comes to my mind that I can also create such files to make my patterns clearer and easier to use for my readers. And this is my first pattern created using layered PDF format.

Because I am using layered PDF format, I add a lot of details into the pattern, so if you open the file with all layers displayed, you will see very messy pages with a lot of lines and dots and colors. I bet you will be confused if you print all layers out. Don't worry, just follow the steps to print out a layered PDF, and you will thank technology for creating such wonderful and convenient file format.

There is also some small changes in the patterns. If you print out your size (for example, size M), you will see that there are both cutting lines and sewing lines. I have seen many newbies complaining that they do not know how to determine seam allowance in a pattern that only has cutting lines or sewing lines. In order to help, I am adding both sewing lines and cutting lines into the pattern, and if you print the pattern out, you will see them both. The inner lines are sewing lines, and the outer lines are cutting lines. If you want to sew exactly like how the pattern is created, just cut along the cutting lines. If you want to make some alterations to the pattern, use the sewing lines.

Normally, I create patterns for both regular and petite sizes, but this dress is quite simple and have no waistline defined, and you can wear it a bit long or short. So, there is only one pattern for the dress.

After printing and taping together all pages, you will get a pattern like this (I just print one size only):

OK, that's some improvements that I made to my patterns, and here is the link to download: the Sleeveless drop waist dress (size XXS - XXL).

Please check for your size in the size chart before printing. This pattern can be printed on both A4 and Letter sized paper.

New pattern for hot summer: the sleeveless dropped waist dress

Well, it's hot now in the northern hemisphere. I have seen news about heat waves everywhere in many countries: Germany, France, India, and of course, my home country Vietnam. It is so terribly hot that I have to hide in the office most of the time during the day to protect my delicate skin from burning.

I am inspired to make a pattern for a dress meant for this kind of weather: the sleeveless dropped waist dress. It is a classic style, which carries the feeling of the 1920s. And the most important thing is that, it is  relaxed and comfortable for hot days.

The dropped waist dress typically fits loosely on the body, transitioning into a gathered or pleated skirt at the hip, rather than the natural waistline. This dress is suitable for many body shapes - either a slender woman or a plus size woman can look good in this dress. But it works best with specific body types (according to many articles that I have read):

- Slender women with smaller bust and hips: It helps to show off you legs, delicate collarbones and toned arms.

- Women with apple shape: The loose fit of the dropped waist dress helps to cover up the mid-section of your body.

- Plus sizes: many brands opt for dropped waist dresses for plus size women. If you are relatively straight up and down, or carry your weight around your mid section, you may find this dress suitable. Choose a more loosely fitting dress for a more flattering fit.

- Hourglass figure: Although a dropped waist dress is not the best choice for women with perfect hourglass body shape, it is still a nice choice for comfort. A woman with hourglass figure can find it less flattering than other fitted dress, but it is not a problem, you are still beautiful after all.

-  Pear shaped figure: Many recommend against choosing a dropped waist dress for a heavy bottomed woman, however, if you are pear shaped and in love with this style, choose a dress with strong detailing around the neckline to divert attention from your hips.

Now, let's see how the pattern looks like in 3D simulation that I have made:

The dress will be available tomorrow when I finish grading and converting it into printable PDF.

Love,
Tien the Little Sewist
